Magen David Adom continues to be on high alert in sderot

17/05/2007

PRESS RELEASE
By Racheli Cohen, Assistant Spokesman

On the 17th May 2007, Sderot continued to suffer more missile attacks which fell in the city and joined the tens of others that have fallen there in the past two days, causing scores of  people wounded both in body and mind.  MDA teams in Sderot were called out again from one scene to another in order to transport 4 lightly wounded people to the hospitals, and 7 more suffering from anxiety attacks to the centres dealing with anxiety, from 6 volleys that landed on the city.  One public building suffered a direct hit from a Kassam missile, and luckily there were not many people there at that time, and so a more severe tragedy was avoided, and the event ended with 2 lightly injured people and a few others suffering from anxiety attacks.

Following security and intelligence assessments, Magen David Adom is prepared for a worsening of the situation  with the Kassam missiles falling in wider and additional regions, and prolonged stays in the MDA stations over the weekend.

In a meeting to assess the situation which MDA Director General, Eli Bin, held this morning, with the Regional Directors and members of his staff, he announced that the Alert Level 3, which is close to the highest level, will stay in force until further notice.  MDA Director General ordered the Operations and Logistics Department to place 15 additional ambulances in the area of the city of Ashkelon, which will be on operational alert , and also to prepare a plan for spreading them out all over the city in case of a worsening of the situation.

In addition, MDA Director General, ordered the Director of MDA Volunteers' department to send tens of volunteers to the Ashkelon area to reinforce MDA teams, and to put them up in hotels in the area, so that they are immediately available.

In addition, the Director of MDA Volunteers' department was ordered to place the 50 foreign volunteers who have just finished their course, in the MDA stations that are reinforcing MDA Lachish and Negev regions, so that they can carry out the day to day routine activities and allow workers to be released to help out in the areas under fire.

The International Department was asked by MDA Director General to be in touch with all the Friends' Societies  of MDA around the world and give them reports and descriptions of MDA’s activities, so that they in their turn can prepare a campaign to raise funds.

The Blood Services were ordered to be prepared to have a sufficient supply of blood, and to increase the blood units and components available in the hospitals treating the injured.

MDA Regional Directors and Members of Staff gave a short account of how they are prepared and their activities in the areas under their jurisdiction.
